The number of false accusations of rape in the UK are increasing rapidly, seemingly since the Savile enquiry (Operation Yewtree) was brought about. Hundreds of men are being arrested and questioned out of the blue every day, and had their lives turned upside down just because a woman has walked into a Police station and cried [mostly historical] rape. Bail can last for months while the CPS makes the decision whether or not to charge, and in this time the accused is in emotional turmoil, sometimes being physically/verbally abused because of the allegation. If they are released without charge at the end of this period, there is currently NO help to take out a case against their accuser for their lies. It costs around £12,000 to file a case for deformation of character, which is money most people don't have. Legal aid is not an option. It is extremely unfair that a woman can make these allegations and have a case brought against someone with ease and without cost, yet the accused cannot legally fight back unless they have thousands of pounds disposable income. Therefore the accused is left with the public stigma of being called a rapist, often harming their relationships and reputation for their rest of their lives, and the emotional trauma that brings. Legal Aid should be available for men to get justice against their accuser and clear their name, bringing closure to the situation and enabling them to get on with their lives, instead of being left in a state of frustration and anguish.
