The NRA isn’t special. No Exemption for the Gun Lobby!

The Issue

Cutting out lobbyists, creating transparency, and holding politicians accountable to their constituents rather than their bankrolls... campaign finance reform sounds pretty cool, right? No wonder the NRA threw a hissy fit about it.

When the NRA heard that the DISCLOSE Act included strict financial disclosure provisions that applied to politically active nonprofits like itself, it got pissy. The gun lobby unilaterally declared itself too cool for transparency. Big surprise. What's appalling is that Congress, including House Democratic leadership, responded by giving in. When this loophole raised outrage, Congress only widened it to improve other large lobbying organizations.

The DISCLOSE Act just failed to overcome a filibuster in the Senate, failing with the loopholes still in place. But Senate leaders have promised to keep pushing the bill. Tell Congress that any future version of the DISCLOSE Act needs to get rid of these shameful exceptions.
