Tell Speaker Boehner: Don't defend the unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act with our money

The Issue

This week it was revealed that Speaker John Boehner is using taxpayer money to pay for private lawyers to defend the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the law that prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages and defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

And not only is Speaker Boehner using our money to defend discrimination against gay and lesbian couples, he's agreed to pay one of the most expensive law firms in the country (one with strong ties to the Bush administration) over $500,000 for work on the case.

This is nothing more than rank hypocrisy from a politician who keeps on telling us that our country is too broke to pay for vital government services, but sees no problem using our money to score cheap political points.

The Justice Department under Attorney General Eric Holder has already determined it's unconstitutional and decided not to defend its constitutionality.

Tell Speaker Boehner: Don't use taxpayer money to pay for your defense of the Defense of Marriage Act.
