Tell Denver to Stop Discriminating Against Service Dogs

Tell Denver to Stop Discriminating Against Service Dogs

The Issue

The U.S. Department of Justice's recent Americans with Disabilities Act ruling prevents discrimination against service dogs simply because of appearance or breed.

Denver has a breed discriminatory law that bans all "pit bulls" from the city, including service dogs. Their breed specific legislation has proven to be costly and ineffective, and now it's also illegal.

Due to the new federal regulations, Denver can no longer ban "pit bull" service dogs from the city, but the City Council has repeatedly postponed an amendment which would exempt service dogs from the breed ban. It would also delete the portion of the ban which prohibited the transport of pit bull-type dogs through Denver. These small measures would be an important step toward repealing the breed ban entirely.

By not amending their ordinance to allow "pit bull" service dogs, Denver is refusing equal access to their city for the disabled who rely on their certified canine companions. They are no longer just discriminating against dogs, but against people with disabilities, too.

Tell Denver to pass this amendment and stop discriminating against people with service dogs.
