Improve sustainability of Mackerel stocks

The Issue

Both anglers and artisan skippers have noticed the dramatic and continuing decline in Mackerel (Scomber scombrus) stocks visiting Irish inshore waters in recent years. This is clearly linked to raised qoutas and increasingly unsustainable commercial fishing practices throughout the NW Atlantic. Mackerel are a key species in the overall marine ecosystem, being a vitally important food source for many larger predators. Unless something radical is done to preserve and protect mackerel stocks there will be serious direct and indirect ecological consequences in our waters, which will also seriously, negatively impact recreational angling and angling-related business. If you agree then please sign this petition. It will be used to lobby the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine to reconsider the true value of the species. Together we can make a difference!
