Save Ethnic Studies

Save Ethnic Studies

The Issue

This is a petition created to represent the support of Mexican/American Studies Department and classes available in the Tucson Unified School District. As concerned citizens, students, alumni, parents, and national supporters we will apply pressure on the Tucson Unified School District school board to disobey/challenge the unconstitutional law HB 2281, which has been named a violation of human rights by the United Nations. The school district has been found in non-compliance of HB 2281 by now, attorney general Tom Horne. The district has up to 60 days, (until March 3rd, 2011) to comply with the law, or compromise with the new Superintendent of public instruction, John Huppenthal. His political campaign was based on the platform to "eliminate la raza." With a politician like that, compromise to save a Mexican/American, (Raza) studies department does not sound too promising. After the 60 days, TUSD will receive a 10% budget cut. The financial consequences facing this school board seems to be driving their decision to comply with an unjust law. This program has changed the lives of so many students, parents, community members, etc. To learn more about what the program is about, and what you can do to help, visit saveethnicstudies.org
