The Issue
A leaked Cabinet memo from John Swinney's office states that inital work has started on costings for setting up a new Scottish state in the event of a yes vote. That memo was written in 2012.
On 28th of May 2014, the UK Treasury issued the Scotland Analysis: Fiscal Policy and Sustainability report which details the UK Government's estimates for setting up a new Scottish state. Both the First Minister, Rt Hon Alex Salmond and the Finance Minister, John Swinney have claimed that this figure is wrong.
With 16 weeks to go to the referendum, the people of Scotland need to know the initial costs which will be incurred in the event of a yes vote in the Scottish Independence Referendum on 18th September 2014. If the work has already been carried out, the people of Scotland should be allowed to see the figures. If it has not, the Scottish Governemnent needs to explain to the Scottish people why this information is not available for such a momentous change to our constitutional arrangement.
This is an important decision for the people of Scotland to make and it is best made with the full facts in front of us. Therefore, we ask the Scottish Government to provide the financial information requested in this petition.
