Put animal welfare on the international trade agenda

Put animal welfare on the international trade agenda
The issue
The lives of millions of animals are at stake
The Australian government is in the final stages of negotiations on a free trade agreement with Pacific Rim countries including the United States, Singapore and Japan – but animals are being sidelined in the discussions.
We are calling on the Australian government to ensure that sustainable and humane policies with regards to the trade in animals are put in place.
The government has commitments to animals and the environment enshrined in international law. We have learned that they do not support making international environment commitments enforceable through the trade agreement. It’s animals who will once again suffer.
Additionally, these negotiations could allow multi-national corporations to challenge laws in court that are there to protect animals. Why are we allowing huge companies to dictate Australian policy towards our animals? The government must step in for our animals.
We need your support to make sure that animals are put on the agenda, where they should be.
