PBS: Our Children Need to See LGBT Families Reflected on TV!

The Issue

Take a moment to imagine growing up never seeing families like yours on TV and how that might make you feel.  Studies are showing that almost half of the children in the US are not living with both a mother and a father. This means that half of the children in the US are represented by different types of families than are typically reflected on TV.  There are 3 million LGBT parents in the U.S. with some 6 million children. This issue matters not only to those children, but to all of their friends, classmates, family members and allies.

All the children's shows we've seen on PBS have families with ONLY a Mommy and Daddy and children need to see varieties of different types of families. It is important for all children to see same sex parents on TV to help normalize the issue and create more awareness.  Please sign this important petition I started to help all our children have a more peaceful future.  Educating our children early about diversity and acceptance is the best way that we can help prevent bullying and suicide.  Together we can create a brighter future and a more peaceful world for our children!

Please sign your name and pass it along to help spread the word. The more signatures we get the more powerful of a message we will be able to send and the more likely we are to see some changes.

Thank you!

Dear Ms. Juliani: Paula Kerger and others at PBS have received some emails regarding your petition on Change.org, and we welcome the opportunity to address how PBS KIDS presents family life in our programs. At PBS, we feel strongly that we must serve all of America and reflect its growing diversity. As you note, today’s children are growing up in a world that is changing in many ways. Given that 82% of all children ages 2 to 8 in the United States tune into PBS, we know we have a responsibility to reflect the world as our young viewers experience it. You mention in your petition that “all the children’s shows we’ve seen on PBS have families with ONLY a Mommy and Daddy.” However, PBS KIDS series have long presented a wide array of households. Public television stations have presented programs that portray children living in many different types of families, including households headed by same sex parents. PBS KIDS series also address adoption, divorce and other important topics that affect the daily lives of children. In addition to the regular “cast” of animated characters in our series, several of our programs include live-action sequences that show people in a variety of roles and family structures. PBS’ key commitment is to provide research-driven, curriculum based media that contributes to academic achievement. We are extremely grateful that an annual nationwide survey has repeatedly found that Americans see PBS KIDS as the #1 educational TV/media brand and the top provider of content that helps children learn reading, math and essential skills. Thank you for your interest in our content. We hope you will continue to watch and enjoy PBS KIDS programming on your local station.
