Renew the tender for the OCTO Flexible West Mainland Bus Service and promote and support this service which provides a vital transport link for the community.

The Issue

Orkney Community Transport Organisation (OCTO) currently provides a Flexible service in the West Mainland of Orkney, which links parts of the West Mainland to Finstown and then on to Kirkwall via the Old Finstown Road. Users depend on the service to get to work, college, appointments, and to access shops and services in Kirkwall.

OCTO is a  "Community Interest Company" (cic. for short) so any surpluses or profits remain in the community, either getting reinvested in the company to develop their services, or get donated to their partners, Orkney Disability Forum, who operate the Dial-a-bus service.

Orkney Islands Council’s transport policy states:

We want to “promote, encourage and deliver an effective and efficient transportation network that supports the economic vitality, community well-being and environmental integrity of all of Orkney.”

OCTO’s  Flexible West Mainland service addresses these aims by offering a flexible friendly service which creates jobs in the local community, reduces traffic on the roads, reduces carbon emissions, and is helping to address the travel needs of the rural community. However OIC have made the decision not to renew the tender for the route so the service will come to an end in January 2015.
