Work together so Train Wood stays in public ownership for people to use
The Issue
Norfolk County Council is to planning sell at auction (in May) the land at the beginning of Marriott's Way known as Train Wood. The land does not have a high cash value, but its worth is very high in terms of: nature - it is a county wildlife site, a rare wet and dry woodland with riverbank frontage, very important for kingfisher, otter and other species; heritage - it is the site of the original Norwich City Station; and access - it is the beginning of the long-distance Marriott's Way, part of a Sustrans national cycle route, and Norwich's only dedicated city-country non motorised trail. There are many risks to the land associated with its being sold off. It could be sold on or not maintained adequately, for example. Monitoring the management of the woodland could well cost the city council more in the long run than buying it for a small sum now.
