Stop selling racist memorabilia

The Issue

In Hebden’s St George's Square is a shop that sells cuddly toy golliwogs both in store and online, displayed in a large glass cabinet in the shop. We support local businesses, but this petition requests that Feathergills Emporium withdraw this product. Golliwogs first featured in a children’s story and some people associate them with the innocence of childhood. But golliwog imagery is inspired by the blackface minstrel tradition where white people caricatured people of colour in a racially stereotyping way. This tradition drew on a racist set of beliefs and assumptions that people of colour were somehow less than white people, racism that is reflected in the name of the toy itself. This has been raised in person with Feathergills by numerous residents with requests that the shop stop selling the dolls, but these have been refused. Please support this petition to demand that the shop stops selling the toys.
