Equality California recently early-endorsed Betsy Butler in the race to represent California's new 50th Assembly District. They did so on the grounds that Asm. Butler is an incumbent legislator, even though she only represents about 1% of the current district and will have to move into the district in order to be eligible to run.

Even more embarrassingly, Equality California did not interview the other candidates in the race, such as Torie Osborn, an out lesbian with decades-long track record of activism for equality and social justice, or Richard Bloom, the current mayor of Santa Monica.

Given the strength of the field, Equality California owes the other candidates in this race, as well as the voters of the 50th district a fair and transparent process.
