Scrap the plans for A555 By-pass from the M60 to the A6

The Issue

Stockport Liberal Democrats along with the Conservatives have become very vocal about their wish to push ahead with the M60 to A6 By-pass, they're putting the case forward to Government Minister Danny Alexander to give the go ahead for this section of the SEMMMS relief road.  Stockport already has enough pollution, residents enough traffic noise, little green space remaining, and this will only make congestion worse funnelling traffic direct to Airport city from Bredburys Junction 25!

Scrap the plans for A555 By-pass from the M60 to the A6

1. This would destroy a vast swathe of the beautiful Goyt Valley nature reserve, along with miles and miles of greenbelt land. This is enjoyed by walkers, cyclists, horse riders and contains many protected species of plant and insect.

2. The Goyt Valley is an important floodplain, nothing should be built on a flood plain, particularly a large banked up road.

3. The air pollution in Stockport will become so polluted, it will incur an EU fine!

4. Huge geological problems building over the red rock fault line AND and the area is also riddled with coal mines.

5. Latest consultation cost £750,000 - trivial response from the public.

6. Construction costs rose from £170 million to £1 billion this was in 2009, todays costs far higher.

7. Airport city to attract firms from Stockport with no business rates. This will hit Stockports already stretched business owners.

8. The original 2001 SEMMMS agreement stated A555 was only to be built for local traffic. New aim to bolster Airport city, which is not local traffic. Job losses from Stockport.

9. Over 300,000 HGV movements during construction

10. Large attenuating ponds will be needed to collect the contaminated run off from the road.

11. Manchester City Council is interested purely as an M60 to Airport city link road.

12. Cheshire East Council want to build houes along the route with an infill development and connect to the M60. More vested interest.

We don't want this expensive, pollution, congestion riddled airport road!
