The recent BBC2 documentary "The Planners" exposed standards of behaviour amongst certain Labour Councillors on Rochdale’s Planning Committee that fall way below expectations. The rail-roading of process to grant approval for an extension to a local Mosque against the recommendation of planners, and the utter contempt shown to Councillors who tried to legitimately question the decision, was both an abuse of process and brought the town into disrepute. The Councillors involved should be held to account, in particular Cllr Begum should be removed from the committee for her part in this debacle, and the decision to grant planning permission in the case of the Shia Mosque should be revisited.
