Please provide a safe crossing across Goswell Rd. between Fann & Baltic streets.

The Issue

Residents, workers and visitors cross the Goswell Road between Fann Street and Baltic Street in the City of London, both to and from the Islington side. Fast moving and sometimes heavy traffic together with a bus stop, make this a hazardous event. There are many people who cross here including teenage students of the Italia Conte school, frail elderly folk, parents with young children, people slowed by mobility problems. The Golden Lane Estate, the Barbican Estate, Peabody and other Islington estates, various hotels, shops and offices, various schools, the Fortune Street park and bus stops collectively create pedestrian traffic.

Dear Ms Clifford, Re: Petition to provide a safe crossing across Goswell Rd. between Fann & Baltic streets I write with regard to your online petition which has 32 supporters. We take several factors into account when assessing whether the introduction of a formal pedestrian crossing at a specific site is justifiable. In doing so, we apply Department for Transport criteria to ensure that pedestrian crossings are placed where they will be most beneficial. The criteria considers factors such as: • accident history • traffic flow and composition • traffic composition • road use, site characteristics and accident history • surrounding environment, traffic speeds, accessibility and visibility. Funding priority for road safety schemes is prioritised to those sites which have the poorest accident records. In the case of Goswell Road, our records show that during the last three years, there were two personal injury accidents on the stretch of road in question (both involving cyclists). As such, this location would not currently form a priority for road safety funding. However, your request will be included in the Ward Improvement Plan. The plan provides a process where scheme proposals can be prioritised by local Councillors and when funding becomes available, can be duly allocated to those schemes deemed of highest priority. During the process, it may be decided to install an alternative crossing facility. If this scheme request is deemed a priority and funding is provided, residents will be notified at that time.
