Call on Congress to Help Cure Childhood Cancer
Call on Congress to Help Cure Childhood Cancer
The Issue
Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children. One in every 330 Americans develops cancer before the age of 20. Every school day, 46 more children are diagnosed - and the incidence of childhood cancer is increasing. 12,500 children and teenagers will be diagnosed this year. 2,300 will die. Tragically, the causes of most childhood cancers remain unknown and unpreventable.
But every year there are new victories. Childhood leukemia, which used to be a death sentence, is now cured 80% of the time. Other promising breakthroughs are just over the horizon. You can join the battle by contacting Congress today.
Urge your Senators and Representatives to co-sponsor The Conquer Childhood Cancer Act. The measure would: "advance medical research and treatments into pediatric cancers, ensure patients and families have access to the current treatments and information regarding pediatric cancers, establish a population-based national childhood cancer database, and promote public awareness of pediatric cancers."
The issue of childhood cancer is not a partisan or political one, and many leaders in both parties have joined together in support. However, this may not be enough to ensure the bill's final passage. It has made it through committee in the Senate but has not been brought to a full vote. The House has not yet even considered it. Email and call your Senators and Representatives to let them know how important this legislation is to you and your family. With your help, better treatments and possibly a cure will be within reach.
