Dear Honorable Governor Jerry Brown,
Dear Correctional Executive Officers,
Dear Daniel Paramo,
Dear Jennifer Shaffer,
The People is asking for the release of Inmate Damon Lee Johnson, AKA Ali B. Shuja, #E20385 from Richard J, Donovan Correctional Facility.
* Mr.Damon Shuja Johnson has served 28 years of a 25 yr. to life sentence with a possibility of parole for a crime he did not commit. The DNA proved that Mr Johnson did not shoot Betty Taruke Canty, there was no gun powder on his clothing or skin.
* Mr. Shuja Johnson has been rejected 3 times by the parole board and is not due for the next heading until 2015.
* Mr Shuja Johnson has demonstrated extraordinary rehabilitive potential through consistent and pro active attendance of all his classes and groups, and his prolific, positive artwork. He has mentored inmates that are paroling so that they will not come back to prison, and has served as facilitator to a number of in house support groups.
* Mr Shuja Johnson, for over 10 years, has corresponded with other inmates from other California prisons, and is working on a book entitled "S.O.S. Save Our Sons", whose purpose is, through many inmates recounts, an inspiration outlet to keep youth from entering the prison system.
* The Positive, Pro active stance of Mr. Shuja Johnson is NEEDED at organizations and street level in our Youth and dedicated youth counselors in our communities !
* Mr. Shuja Johnson release will be justified by the fact that he has a loving family home to return to, which includes space to do his art work, and he has a trust to provide for his personal needs.
* Dr. Frank Williams provides an extensive ex-offender program, geographically close to Mr. Johnsons future home.
* Mr, Shuja Johnson is the Living proof that illness, being whieelchair bound and chronic physical pain is not a barrier to bettering his life, the fate of his Loved lones and the community at large.
Please. we respectfully urge you to FREE DAMON SHUJA Johnson !! We need him!!
BROTHER DAMON SHUJA SPEAKS :
I am a 51yr. man, a first time offender , incarcerated for 28 years, for a 1986 attempted robbery and murder at the young age of 23.
I was not the shooter.
For not taking action to somehow prevent the murder, I apologize and make amends daily to the victim and her family.
I do accept full responsibility for not being able to stop the murder from occuring, , and will feel subsequent remorse and shame until I die.
I have maintained a spotless, law abiding behavior record and devoted myself, even behind bars, to providing council and guidance to families, friends and other inmates.
A Gift of Love where Angels often do not land, (behind these walls) is invaluable to those who need help the most.
I became gravely ill with thyroid cancer in 2004
I am now wheelchair dependent due to a fractured neck in 2007; which CDCR neglected until 2009; surgeons, in a 15 hour ordeal, fused my entire cervical area (neck vertebrae) with steel.
I also suffer ankylosing spondylitis which is a life-long auto-immune arthritic disease, causing inflammation and stiffness in my spine and lower back.
Through it all I have maintained a positive outlook on life and await my release to return home.
I have joined every available rehabilitative and educational program put in my path, currently writing a book, and an excellent self-taught artist, who wishes to share my art with the world.
I am setting up an ‘art and greeting card’ non-profit venture, and wish to create a scholarship focusing on People of Color and the Disabled who have a parent(s) incarcerated.
Although society has labeled me, I refuse to be that victim of circumstance. I am innocent and it is time for me to contribute back to that same society that had criminalized me and that I forgive;
to leave a legacy for my children, friends and future descendents, , through positive networking goals (setting up the foundation to promote prisoners art, books and life stories) , that will mark my path as a successful Black Man and not a statistic, to empower other inmates and families trapped into the Prison Industrial Complex.
I thank you for your presence, time, and support.
