The Issue

During the Scottish independence debate there is a noticable loss of comment available against articles which need to have informed responses.  There are currently many BBC posted articles which have omissions and inaccuracies that need to be identified and challenged.

The BBC has steadfastly refused to acknowldge that they are potentially providing such innaccurate and misleading material as fact, when there are alternate interpretations being effectively suppressed by a previously trusted national broadcaster.

The right to reply is not being effectively exercised and there is an inordinate delay between submitting a complaint about such articles and receiving what are becoming stereotypical responses from the BBC's own complaints handling department.

All other "national" news channels on the website have almost unlimited opportunities to comment.  Scotland doesn't.  This can only be interpreted as state broadcaster sponsored censorship.

By opening up all the news articles to comment there will be a display of willingness to be held to account.  There are already rules applicable to the content of posted comments, and those should be adequate to control the submission of abusive and offensive text.

The BBC has also had additional funding to support their coverage of the referendum campaign, which will allow them to direct some of that resource to managing the comments applied to such articles.
