Alternative Support for Victims of Cyber Bullying / Trolling.
Alternative Support for Victims of Cyber Bullying / Trolling.
The Issue
Cyber Bullying / Trolling is rapidly becoming a pandemic putting everyone at risk ( not just our teenagers). The recent news stories have highlighted the need for more to be offered than "press a button to report abuse.". Below we outline an alternative proposal we ask your to support.
We believe that putting the onus on these social media sites to monitor and administer reported abuse raises a conflict of interest and that therefore independent monitoring and administration is required. Therefore we are petitioning the government to enforce social media sites to maintain a permanent "click through for help" advertisement on every page. This will link the person to independent support services which could provide instant support. This independent support service would provide help in the following ways:
- educational support on everything-security, privacy settings etc.
- psychological and emotional support
- forward the most extreme cases for appropriate assistance.
We realize that to run this service we would require paid professionals in IT and psychology professionals and that this would be a 24 hours a day 7 days a week operation. We believe this should be funded by the social media sites who currently make huge profits and who have a moral and social obligation to step up the levels of support available.
We ask you to support this petition.
