100 Americans Can Stop the “Pet” Primate Trade

100 Americans Can Stop the “Pet” Primate Trade
The Issue
The United States Senate, 100 Americans who jointly represent all 50 states, is the last hurdle toward passing the Captive Primate Safety Act and ending the trade in primates if they are to be kept as “pets.” The bill has already been approved by the House of Representatives. The bill has already been approved by the Committee of jurisdiction in the Senate. Please ask your Senators to push for immediate passage of the Captive Primate Safety Act.
Keeping primates as pets involves enormous suffering and threats to human safety. Chimpanzees, macaques, baboons, and other species may have their teeth or fingernails removed to make them seem less dangerous. We can no longer allow animals to be mutilated in the name of companionship. Furthermore, nonhuman primates can carry harmful diseases such as Ebola, tuberculosis, and herpes-B.
The bottom line is this: Wildlife belongs in the wild.
The Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 80), if passed, would prohibit the import, export, and interstate commerce in nonhuman primates if they are going to be kept as “pets.” This important piece bill is just one step away from enactment.
To help see this landmark bill become a reality, we need you to urge your Senators to contact the Senate Majority Leader and ask him to bring up the bill as soon as the Senate convenes after the August recess.
Thank you!
