Halt the sale of Woodstock Hydro

The Issue

Kathleen Wynn, Premier
David Denison, Chair of the Board of Directors, Hydro One
Rosemarie T. Leclair, Chair and Chief Executive Officer, Ontario Energy Board

Woodstock City Council has engaged in a private exchange with Hydro One and has not explained why this sale should have proceeded. There is no free market opportunity here that would guarantee the highest price for this 100 year old utility that has served its ratepayers with distinction. Government penalty taxes of 33% for non government investors prevent us from getting the most value out of this sale, if it had to be sold at all.

Ask the government to remove the punitive 33% tax penalty for sales of municipal hydro utilities to non government investors of up to 49%. Such a step would enable the inflow of capital for the future while retaining local control. Otherwise, we're in the lap of another government controlled monopoly that looks very much like its predecessor, Ontario Hydro, a real wolf in sheep's clothing.

The Ontario Energy Board must approve this transaction and can halt it until a true sellers market exists. They need to examine in detail that lack of public consultation, or even explanation. That’s in the public interest.

You don’t have to live in Woodstock to make a difference. This lack of public process and this outcome is in the interests of anyone living in Ontario. And if you can, add a web link to this petition to your facebook page. That will really help.
