Please create a safe cross walk for school children at East 14th and Fraser

The Issue

There have been two recent incidents of pedestrians hit at this crosswalk- one of which was a 8 month pregnant pedestrian who was knocked unconscious by a car.  We have also witnessed near accidents involving pedestrians, mainly children.  This crosswalk  is regularly used by children walking to Nightingale Elementary School, catching the bus to Lord Tupper Secondary, preschoolers and parents with babies attending the Mount Pleasant Family Center, numerous daycares and patrons of Robson Park. How many injuries or fatalities have to happen before the city takes action?

The current crosswalk is dangerous:

- There is no traffic light and no school children crossing signs.

- Drivers can't see and do not stop for children trying to cross to get to school and the park.

- Drivers are turning off Kingsway, speeding and don't see the signs.

- There is a curve in the road, then the road narrows near the crosswalk so drivers speed up and don't see the pedestrian crossing sign

- Fraser Street is a four lane road and drivers pass drivers who do stop pedestrians while  risking the safety of unseen pedestrians.

- Kids being kids, cut corners and don't walk to the traffic light two blocks away.

We, the neighborhood, have collectively been asking the city to take care of this concern for over 10 years.  Some of us have attended meetings at city hall, but no changes have been made.

The city installed a traffic light for cyclists at 10 th Ave and Fraser, one block away from Broadway, but they have not addressed urgent concerns for children's safety.

Responded
The City is in the process of prioritizing locations for new traffic signal installations, and this intersection has been short listed for a signal within the next 4 years. Thank you for taking the time to create\sign this petition and for sharing the details of your experiences while crossing there. We appreciate hearing from citizens about areas of concern and if you have anything further to add, feel free to contact me.
