Save Our Students
The Issue
By signing your name to this petition, you are supporting the following letter, written to both the BCPSEA (British Columbia Public School Employers' Association) and the BCTF (British Columbia Teachers' Federation). We, as students, are asking that both parties involved resolve this issue as quickly as possible.
"During the past two weeks, schools have been thrown into turmoil by both rotating strikes and teacher lockouts. Classes are being disrupted, extra-curricular activities are being cancelled and students are caught in a fight that ultimately isn’t theirs. Across the province there is serious discussion about how the current strike action will affect teachers, the government, and parents. Yet up to this point, both sides of the dispute have only speculated on the effect that the strike is having and will have on students. The student voice is being left out of the dialogue on an issue that directly affects the entire student population of British Columbia.
As students, we would like to see this issue resolved immediately and to have both parties come to a consensus on a long term cooperative agreement. For many of us, this is not the first time that political unrest has disrupted our education. The fact that a single student can experience multiple periods of unrest in one K-12 educational career is unreasonable. Neither side can justify that what they are doing is for the students, when it is the students who are being most negatively affected.
In schools, we are taught to be cooperative and respectful. We hope that you can show us the same courtesy, by resolving this conflict as quickly as possible.
Yours in education,
The Students"
As well, if you would like to voice more opinions than what is said in this letter, we strongly encourage you to write to your local MLA, as well as the Minister of Education, the Premier and the BCTF. You can use the following links to find contact for these people.
