Robyn PARKER, MP, Minister for the Environment: Stop planned closure of Kings Beach Car Park, near Broken Head, Byron Bay
The issue
Kings beach is a unique beach popular with wildlife and nature lovers which is accessed by a walk through rare, subtropical, littoral rainforest. It is a a tourist attraction for people wishing to discover a unique side of Byron's heritage. It draws tourists from all over the world and many repeat visitors.
During summer months there is already insufficient car parking available to meet the demand. Removing this car park will only result in unsafe informal parking along Seven Mile Beach road and runs the risk of the establishment of informal walking tracks to access the beach. potentially jeopardising this fragile piece of rainforest. The proposed alternative walking track increases by almost three times the distance from a legal car park to Kings Beach.
The rationale for closing the car park to regenerate it, would return less area to rainforest than the establishment of the proposed new walking track would remove. We respectfully ask that NPWS maintain and improve the existing car parking and existing walking access to Kings Beach
The NPWS has as one of its stated aims “increasing visitation to National Parks” this plan would appear to fly in the face of that stated aim.
