Pass statewide legislation prohibiting breed specific legislation.

Pass statewide legislation prohibiting breed specific legislation.
The Issue
Bans on specific breeds of dogs are ineffective, costly, and punish responsible dog owners. "Pit bull" bans impart a false sense of security while having little to no effect on the number of dog bites in communities. Focus needs to be on the owners of dogs and laws put in place that require owners to take responsibility for their dogs and penalize owners who fail to do so, including restrictions on pet ownership.
Municipalities in Ohio, such as Reynoldsburg, are wasting taxpayer money and targeting responsible owners of "pit bulls" for simply owning their dog. Many owners cited have dogs that have done nothing wrong; no bites, no aggressive behavior, nothing. Now families are forced to either give away their pet or move out of the city, and they face up to 90 days in jail and a $750 fine. These breed specific bans also affect service and therapy dogs. Meanwhile, based upon Reynoldsburg Police Reports, other breeds of dogs (non "pit bull type") have been running loose and biting people, including a police officer, with no penalty for their owners. It's time to make dog laws breed neutral and enforce current leash laws and dangerous/vicious ordinances. Let's start focusing on the other end of the leash.
