Lane filtering will help ease congestion in our big cities as it has done in many other countries. While we applaud the lead of the NSW in introducing this rule, it also serves to further confuse interstate motorists. All road rules should be consistent across borders. Currently, riders are being fined for offences in one state that are not offences in their home state. It is impossible for motorists to know all the arcane road rules in all states. It is a ridiculous situation where a rider can cross a border on a perfectly legal bike, wearing a legal helmet, only to find that in the next state the bike and helmet are deemed illegal.
