City Of Sydney Council: Urgent action needed to stop "Demolition by Neglect" of heritage buildings

The issue

Effective action to prevent and address "Demolition by Neglect" is required in order to stop historic and iconic Sydney properties from being left in a state of shameful and ongoing disrepair, ultimately reaching a point where they either:

a) Fall down of their own accord
b) Pass the "point of no return" leaving demolition as the only option.

It is important for the Sydney community that effective action is taken and steps are put in place to ensure that important heritage properties are preserved for future generations. It is also very important that these properties are maintained to a level where they can be productive and contribute to the Sydney community rather than sit unused and under-utilised for years on end. The City of Fremantle in WA is looking to introduce laws which address "Demolition by Neglect" and these could be a good model for the City of Sydney to consider and adopt. The City of Fremantle proposed amendment can be viewed here: http://www.fremantle.wa.gov.au/cityoffremantle/Community_engagement/Community_consultation_projects/Scheme_Amendment_No_59

Please sign this petition and help ensure that Sydney's irreplaceable heritage buildings are protected from neglect and are maintained to a standard where they can be of valuable use to the community
