On April 5, in Prague, President Obama outlined a new approach to addressing the threat posed by nuclear weapons. He clearly recognizes that nuclear weapons have become a security liability rather than an asset, and that U.S. nuclear weapons policy needs to be changed to reflect new global realities.
I strongly support the concrete, pragmatic steps that the president laid out in his speech, including Senate ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), a new U.S.-Russian treaty to verifiably reduce nuclear arsenals, and a global agreement to ban the production of weapons-grade materials. These steps will reduce the likelihood that more nations and terrorists will acquire nuclear weapons and make the world safer.
I urge you to support these initiatives and to vote to ratify the CTBT. Your efforts can help the United States achieve real security.
Sincerely,
