Stop Opponents of Health Care Reform from Distorting the Truth

The Washington Post just revealed that the Lewin Group - which is commonly cited by Republican lawmakers as an "independent, nonpartisan" think tank and whose research has heavily influenced the health care debate  - is owned by a health insurance company.

According to the Washington Post, "...the Lewin Group is part of Ingenix, a UnitedHealth subsidiary that was accused by the New York attorney general and the American Medical Association, a physician's group, of helping insurers shift medical expenses to consumers by distributing skewed data."

Seems like Ingenix and UnitedHealth have much at stake in the ongoing health reform debate. That's hardly the work of an "independent" think tank.

Playing politics with health reform is simply unacceptable - and using insurance company-provided "statistics" to do it is just plain wrong.  Demand that opponents of health care reform stop claiming that data from the Lewin Group is from "nonpartisan" and "independent" sources.

Stop Using Biased Sources to Fight Health Care Reform

Dear Republican Leadership

It has recently come to my attention that a number of Republican lawmakers have been using supposedly independent research of the Lewin Group to fight health care reform without acknowledging this firm is a fully owned subsidiary of a private insurance company.

Please come clean about your sources and stop claiming data from the Lewin Group is “nonpartisan” - the American people deserve an open, honest debate on the best solution to this crisis.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
