The Issue
Parents and other concerned adults, now is your chance to tell Congress that students across the country deserve healthy foods—more vegetables, fruits, vegetarian foods, and healthful nondairy beverages. Sign the petition below and join the healthy school lunch revolution.
Problems with weight and health have become epidemics in the United States. Some groups are especially at risk. African-American and Hispanic children are at particular risk of weight problems, diabetes, and other health concerns. For many of these children, lactose intolerance is also an issue, pointing to the need for lactose-free beverages.
All schools face economic challenges in providing healthful foods. However, a strong federal investment in good food for children pays off for many years to come.
To reduce calories and saturated fat in school meals, schools should include plant-based foods in their regular meal service. All schools should also be able to provide nondairy milk on request. In order to do so, they must have federal support.
THEREFORE, we call on our federal government to help schools provide vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, vegetarian foods, and healthful nondairy beverages in school meal programs.
