Paws for Life Rescue experienced a horrific turn of events with the Royal Oak/Berkley Animal Control. All dog owners need to be made aware of this event, but if you live in or around Royal Oak and Berkley, please take extra caution.
A volunteer was out jogging with our rescue dog Rocky when he broke his collar. There was another dog across the street not on a leash. The two dogs ran at each other, sniffed and a fight ensued. Our dog, being the bigger dog, was taken away by Royal Oak police.
In just over 24 hours since the incident they euthanized Rocky against our express outcry not to. A representative of Paw for Life Rescue made 8 phone calls to Royal Oak the morning after the incident, stating Rocky belongs to the rescue and since we have provided proof of his vaccinations, he must be returned to us. Officer Briggs told her "I don't care" and hung up the phone on her. This was a first incident for Rocky and no humans were attacked. It was simply a dog fight - a friend of the other dog owner was injured when he stuck his hands into the dog fight, but there is no evidence as to which dog bit him. Rocky came from a home with other dogs and had frequent play dates with another dog while with his foster care mom. He was a good dog who didn't deserve this.
The other owner wasn't even ticketed for having his dog off leash. Paws for Life Rescue has repeatedly asked for an investigation into this incident, but this request has fallen on deaf ears. City officials claim a full investigation took place, our fear is that this was no more than a conversation between the officer in question and one or more of her superiors. No city official has contacted Paws for Life to date. An investigation cannot be conducted fairly without speaking to the Rescue.
Paws For Life Rescue is respectfully asking that this matter be investigated by a non-biased, independent third party with full disclosure and transparency, so that all the facts can be brought to light and a true determination as to which, if any, procedures, processes and/or city, county and/or state laws were not obeyed.
Please support this petition for a third party investigation, so that what happened to Paws for Life Rescue and Rocky cannot happen to another owner within the Cities of Royal Oak and Berkley, Michigan.
