Violence among youth and in schools is claiming too many victims. In Chicago this year the tragic death of Derrion Albert, an honors student whose fatal beating was captured on video, brought a spotlight to the issue. 

Last year, 34 students were killed and another 290 shot on the streets of Chicago alone. This is part of a troubling national trend of increased violence among youth and at schools.

Now it's time for us to do something about it. Congress is considering a bill, "Conflict Resolution and Mediation Act of 2009," which would provide funding and support for the most effective solutions to youth violence.

Without these vital on-campus conflict resolution and meditation programs, all students are at risk and our communities will continue to suffer.
