Abolish Compulsory Voting in Australia!

Abolish Compulsory Voting in Australia!
The issue
The essence of a proud democracy is choice. However, in Australia, citizens are compelled to vote, denying them this basic democratic right. Not only is forced voting an exploitation of our freedom, but people with little or no interest in politics are expected to make uninformed votes. It trivializes the voting process when individuals who lack understanding of policies or politicians are forced to vote simply to evade a fine.
Charging citizens for not voting is akin to government theft. Australia is one of the only 32 countries worldwide (mostly in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Oceania) that has mandatory voting and one of the 19 that enforces it. This practice is largely viewed as undemocratic internationally.
Moreover, the question arises as to why we don't get a say on the existence of government itself. For many, governments represent systems of corruption or wayward legislators awarding themselves undeserved pay hikes. Conferring the power of choice onto citizens doesn't support anomalies like these. Government is meant to serve the people, not control them.
More than just ideologically sound, removing compulsory voting in Australia has tangible benefits as well. It would effectively save A$800,000 spent on fine enforcement every year, offering substantial savings to the government.
Let us reclaim our choice. It's time to hold the government accountable and put an end to compulsory voting and penalizing citizens for not voting. Sign this petition if you believe in preserving the integrity of democratic choice. Let us push for a vote to decide the nature of our government and its role in our lives. Let's advocate for democracy in its truest form.
