Stop A388 Accidents - Kill the Speed not People
The Issue
The A388 between Launceston and the Stoke Climsland junction has witnessed countless accidents, serious injuries and several fatalities in recent years. Now virtually surrendered by pedestrians and family cyclists, the A388 has become one of the deadliest stretches of road in the county due to the speed and increase in volume of cars, lorries and motorcycles. Too large to negotiate the corners at speed whilst remaining in their own lane, heavy goods vehicles are routinely seen crossing the white lines as they emerge from blind corners encroaching on the path of oncoming traffic. A local postman stated he was 'terrified' to deliver to properties on this road because of the traffic speed.
Past and current measures to calm the traffic have proved ineffective. Painted 'slow' signs on the road and a 'faux' speed camera sign have little or no impact as vehicles thunder down the narrow hills and winding corners, often oblivious to local residents and business users joining or leaving at minor junctions and driveways. Schoolchildren run the gauntlet daily to cross for Trekenner Primary School or the bus stop for Launceston. There were 3 accidents in 3 consecutive weeks during May this year, at the Lezant junction, one of them leaving a car too badly wrecked to be removed for days.
At Treburley, a pedestrian island is due to be constructed and whilst a crossing is welcome, without effective traffic speed reduction, pedestrians (including school children) will be exposed to significant danger at this location near the brow of a hill and dangerous corner. Last year a serious accident at this location resulted in several serious injuries and two fatalities.
The solution is straightforward; we the undersigned request Cornwall's Council Leader, Linda Taylor, to immediately implement any necessary legislation and instruct the council's wholly owned private company, 'Cormac', to install signage and average speed cameras for a 40 miles per hour speed limit on the A388 between the B3362 (Tavistock) junction and the Stoke Road (Venterdon/Stoke Climsland) junction, in addition to a 30 miles per hour limit where the road passes through Treburley.
