Make Kallista Main Road a 40 km/h Speed Limit Zone - For Our Community's Safety
The issue

The Department of Transport and Planning (VicRoads) and Yarra Ranges Council
Why this matters:
Monbulk Road (C404) runs right through the heart of Kallista, a beloved village in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges.
Every day, locals, visitors, and children walk between the shops, school, market, and community spaces — but vehicle speeds through the township remain dangerously high.
Other townships in the Hills already have 40 km/h town-centre zones, yet Kallista still faces fast-moving through-traffic, with no formal pedestrian crossings outside of the usual school crossing times.
We’re calling for a permanent 40 km/h speed limit through the Kallista village section of Monbulk Road to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.
Our reasons for this change:
🚶♀️ High pedestrian activity: Locals, children, elderly residents, and visitors cross Monbulk Road daily to reach shops, cafés, and the park.
🏫 Near a school and community hub: The Kallista Primary School, community hall, and market bring regular foot traffic.
🌳 Poor sight lines: especially with cars parked along the main stretch
🚗 Inconsistent with nearby towns: Other Dandenong Ranges villages have already adopted 40 km/h for safety and livability.
❤️ Community safety and amenity: A lower speed will make the village safer, quieter, and more enjoyable for everyone.
What we’re asking for:
We, the undersigned, call on:
The Yarra Ranges Shire Council to support and advocate for a permanent 40 km/h limit through the township area.
The Department of Transport and Planning (VicRoads) to undertake a formal speed-zoning review of Monbulk Road (C404) through Kallista, and implement a permanent 40 km/h limit through the township area.
This simple change will protect lives, encourage walking and local trade, and preserve the village character that makes Kallista special.
