The Issue
Where is the oversight in the Nation's Capital? There are visible health, housing, & economic disparities that exist for marginalized and vulnerable District citizens who are plagued daily with social determinants, lack of appropriate, accountable governmental oversights and resources which continue to dangerously expose many including children to lower standards of living, and even worse, death.
As the nation continues to implement Covid-19 vaccination protocols and safety measures, low-income families in the District of Columbia's poorest Wards are left to manage their matters of mental health and trauma without the necessary and appropriate resources. Slumlord behavior has been documented and called out by advocates on the ground with little or no recourse from designated and relevant District agencies. Citizens continue to face uncertainty with their housing and living conditions. Acts of systemic negligence are met with dismissive, non-transparent, unaccountable behavior and responses. Many elected and appointed officials need to have their positions repealed, or revoked in order that the "system-wide" levels of corruption and fraud can be reversed and rooted out.
The District Council, Mayor and other named elected officials are failing predominantly African-American and poorer citizens with matters involving comprehensive mental health resources, police reform, gun violence, homelessness, return citizen services, substance abuse, sustainable housing, employment, & youth violent matters. Where are the responsible legislators that are supposed to govern with accountable means? Where are the audits for the uneven dissemination of resources and funding? Why are there no enforceable consequences for slumlords who continue to haphazardly violate the human rights of the District's disenfranchised, subsidized & senior, housing citizens? Why has there been no "political will" demonstrated in the face of the gun violent "state of emergency" that continues to impact communities of color across the District?
It is time for increased oversight from agencies throughout the Nation's Capital. There has to be greater accountability, legislation, and consequences for those who violate the standards of living and human rights of District citizens. Stronger measures must be implemented to hire, train, and elect those who should be held accountable to the positions that they hold and the matters that they are responsible for governing. Advocacy on behalf of vulnerable and low-income citizens must be formally recognized across all District agencies with strong enforceable consequences for District agencies and professionals found to be in violation.
We the "People of Barry" must "Unite" and "call out" the existing corruption, and colonial mindsets, to demand better, and to help stabilize District citizens who are currently being unfairly governed, residing in unsatisfactory housing and living conditions, managing insurmountable levels of toxic stress, mental health, & trauma with little or no resources resulting in uncontrollable levels of despair, gun violence, and death.
We are D.C.! It's time to get back to taking care of one another! Gentrification is dangerous when it excludes our vulnerable and deserving citizens. The Huffington Post says that, "racism is a mental health crisis". The presence of colonial mindsets and practices governing our poorest citizens in the Nation's Capital without oversight, makes for unhealthy, lopsided government and it divides us as a city. Stand up and stand with us as we call for a thorough and complete audit of the District's current Mayoral administration, Council, systems and spending.
"People of Barry" "Unite" and demand an end to this Mayoral & any future Mayoral administrations and Councilmembers that seek to govern without accountability, transparency, or regard for the well-being of all District citizens.
The Healthy D.C. & Me Leadership Coalition is asking you to watch the kingdom and to demand better from this and all future elected & appointed officials in the Nation's Capital. Our most vulnerable citizens are depending on us all to stamp out corruption. Enough is enough! We are D.C.!
