Say NO To Taxpayer Funded Dome for Soldier Field!
The Issue
In another clout ridden, top-down, tourism-centric, lakefront, White centered development scam, Mayor Lightfoot has announced her enthusiastic support for building a dome over Solider Field.
The estimated cost is reported to be $2.2 BILLION!!!
"Lightfoot has been adamant that she will “do anything” to keep the Bears in Chicago, previously saying the city would make “an extraordinarily compelling economic case” for the team to remain at Soldier Field. Lightfoot and her deputies did not detail how they plan to finance a dome, but did say it could involve NFL financing, naming rights revenue and debt. All Chicagoans need to SPEAK UP and loudly reject the notion of taxpayer subsidies for any construction around Soldier Field. See the plans for what is being cooked up.
If the Bears feel the need for stadium upgrades, let the team PAY for them!
After all, the Bears pulled in $5.8 BILLION in revenue from the years 2001-2020!
In a time of a global pandemic that's killing Black and Brown people three to five times the rates of Whites. At a time of rising prices and shrinking opportunities in our most disinvested and stressed out communities - where the unemployment rate for Black neighborhoods is two to three times higher than White neighborhoods and where the unemployment rate for Black youth is over 18% - this subsidy is racist and an act of economic war on Chicago's families and youth of color.
Let the Mayor and your Alderman know how you feel! NO TAXPAYER SUBSIDY OF ANY SORT FOR A DOME FOR SOLDIER FIELD OR ANY BEARS-RELATED CONSTRUCTION.
