Equal Representation in Lakewood, CA is Needed Now!

Equal Representation in Lakewood, CA is Needed Now!
The Issue
Starting in 2022, Lakewood voters will elect their city council members by “districts”. This means depending on where you live in Lakewood, you will only vote for one candidate to represent your district. Previously, voters selected all five city council members in Lakewood.
Why should this matter to me?
Where city council district lines are drawn may determine where residents can vote, whom they can vote for, and even how responsive a city councilmember is to constituents’ requests.
Will East Lakewood be represented in its own district? In each of the proposed maps, “East Lakewood”, the area east of the I-605 freeway, is defined as a community of interest. The City has proposed the creation of a “District 5”, that includes a large section of East Lakewood.
However, it is proposed that East Lakewood waits until 2024 to vote for a representative. East Lakewood has NEVER had a representative serve on the CIty Council. East Lakewood can not wait for representation! We should vote for our representative in 2022.
