Respected Sirs,
Subject: Protect Animals. Humans who intentionally hurt animals are Sociopaths. Today an animal . Tomorrow a child? Punish Sociopaths.
It is with great anguish that we write to you about some recent occurrences of intolerant human beings who have harmed or killed innocent and very loved street dogs in Bangalore
Dog is man's best friend - This adage refers to their millennia-long history of close relations, loyalty, friendship, and companionship with humans.
In Hindu culture and mythology, for the same fierce loyalty and ability to protect human beings, they are worshiped as Bhairava .Other deities such as nirrti and virabhadra are also associated with dogs
In Christianity, dogs represent faithfulness. .A dog is mentioned in the deuterocanonical Book of Tobit, faithfully accompanying Tobias, Tobit's son and the angel Raphael on their journeys.Jesus told the story of the poor man Lazarus, whose sores were licked by street dogs
Mahatma Gandhi once said "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." Supreme Court the highest authority to uphold the constitution of India reiterates the above by mandating compassion around domestic and street animals ( including dogs )
The Indian pye dog is one of the oldest breed dogs in the world and has been in existence for 4500 years according to archeological findings
Despite the Indian pye dog being highly intelligent and easily trainable, the breed was intentionally downplayed during the British Raj by merchants who wished to sell their foreign breeds.
The India pye dog on the street has been an integral part of our ecosystem and offer the following benefits .
1 ) They help keep the population of rats in check. Let's not forget the plague - black death which wiped out millions of people
2 ) Many find their barking intrusive but they keep our streets free off burglars.
3 ) A pack of dogs would nor allow new dogs to occupy a certain area . This territorial nature of dogs reduces the chances of an area being over populated with dogs
4 ) Given their intelligent nature the Indie pye dog can be used as sniffer dogs at airports, can be employed by police army etc . Will make guide dogs for the blind .This was reiterated by the current PM of India
5 ) Healthy street dogs make blood donors and have helped so many needy pet dogs
The intangible benefit of companionship and kinship with humans needs to be highlighted. Many people experience a serious emotional bond with street dogs
This could be even a child or a senior citizen
The duress it puts on people's mental health when they lose a beloved street dog is un-measurable and very often never considered " acceptable grief " in the society. But it exists and people and pay under pay the price
Who addresses that?
The street dog accompanying a lonely man seeking alms to keeping a night security guard or a police man company is a sight many of us would have witnessed and a sight to behold indeed
There have been repeated news reports around how a bunch of dogs have cared for abandoned human babies until help came their way.
Whether we look at it from the perspective of culture, legality, health or society, dogs have an important role to play, yet the hate crimes against our beloved street dogs are perennially on the rise
We wish to draw your attention to a couple of disturbing incidents in the recent past:
In January 2021, a retired police sub-inspector BK Nageshaiah wantonly ran over a sleeping dog, which ultimately died. (He had tried the same earlier too, causing injuries to the dog.) His vehicle was seized for just a day, and he was out on bail. He received a conviction, with just a fine of Rs. 2,000. https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/bangalore/retired-bengaluru-cop-booked-for-allegedly-running-over-stray-dog-video-leaves-netizens-outraged-7164010/
On 26th January this year, Adi planned and ran over some sleeping community dogs near his house, killing a harmless dog named Lara.
And what was Adi’s reason? Because "they bark and I don't like them".
He ran over her chest repeatedly, leaving her dead instantly, and an entire community of caregivers broken-hearted. Animal lovers from across the city came together on 1st February to mourn the passing of this innocent being. ( https://youtu.be/gIAuqAhmjFs
As a country and state while we aspire to be economically developed , we also strive to emotionally rich , kind and empathetic
These wilful acts lack empathy and they border on being sociopathic
Today they can do this to dogs what is the surety that tomorrow a child would not be a victim?
Also if these crimes don't get their due punishment what example are we setting.for the future generation ? That this behavior is acceptable?
The honourable CM was inconsolable and desolate upon the demise of his pet dog. This is how most street dog caregivers feel when they lose one dog after another, more so when they are lost to callous and cruel acts of human beings. Dog is a dog whether at home or on the street. Love is love We appeal to you to implement the following:
-To make Karnataka a safe place for the street and pet animals. To let no wilful hate crime go unnoticed, be it towards man or animal.
-To create a repository of people exhibiting sociopathic behaviour, by tracking these cruel acts. We would like to Nageshaiah and Adi on this list on priority.
-To push for the pending amendment draft of PCA ( Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ) Act , 1960 which will take the penalties to Rs. 75,000 with 5 years’ imprisonment.
-A program to be included on animal laws for police personnel to help them assess and process such cases more effectively.
-A program to be included in schools to sensitise children towards their environment.
Animal Birth Control (ABC) is the compassionate method of keeping dog population in check. To strengthen ABC, coupled with anti-rabies management programs across the state.
-Lastly to make our state a more inclusive place for our Indian Pye dogs They have existed for thousands of years. Humans have encroached in to their habitat and the least we can do is co exist with them . The British raj undermined our Indian dogs . Will the Indian government too ?
Thanks for your attention
