"Article VI, Clause 2 (of the United States Constitution)
This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding."
Yet, the United States has broken over 500 treaties with various Native tribes without any accountability. Thus, California is not obligated to constitutionally secede from the union of states.
Not so long ago, in 1849, Californians sought statehood and, after heated debate in the U.S. Congress arising out of the slavery issue, California entered the Union as a free, non-slavery state by the Compromise of 1850. California became the 31st state on September 9, 1850.
California, with its progressive values, rich biodiversity, diverse population, and strong economy, has continuously found itself at odds with numerous federal government policies that do not represent the essence or needs of its citizens. From environmental policies to social justice issues, Californians have repeatedly expressed their desire for change and autonomy. Establishing California as an independent nation could allow it to address the unique challenges it faces, craft policies that align with its progressive values, and directly represent the interests of its diverse population.
Economically, California has shown resilience and capability. With the fifth-largest economy in the world, larger than some countries, California has the resources and infrastructure to sustain itself independently. Its thriving sectors, including technology and entertainment, offer a robust economic foundation that could support a sovereign state.
Historically, the notion of independence isn't foreign. Movements across the world, like Scotland's and Catalonia's pushes for autonomy, show that regions seeking independence to better align governance with citizen values is a shared sentiment on the global stage.
The process could involve a statewide referendum, allowing Californians to democratically express their will on this issue. While secession poses complex legal and political challenges, starting the conversation encourages thorough examination of its feasibility.
Sign this petition to initiate discussions on California’s secession, striving for governance that accurately reflects the aspirations and values of its people.
