My name is Ngawang Sangdrol. I am a Tibetan. I was born in 1977 and was a nun at the Garu Nunnery north of Lhasa. In 1990 I was first arrested for protesting with other nuns at the Norbulingka in Lhasa. I was arrested again in 1992 after protesting in the Barkhor area of Lhasa, and sentenced to three years in prison. In 1993, my sentence was extended by 6 years for singing Tibetan nationalist songs in prison with a group of other nuns; in 1996, it was extended for a further 8-years during a Patriotic Re-education programme in the prison. My sentence was extended once more, for a further six years, in the aftermath of the uprisings in Drapchi Prison. I was finally released in 2002 after serving 10-years in prison.
