#FREETHEJAILER - Lets get Palace Jailer on MTGO
As of the moment, Palace Jailer (from Conspiracy: Take the Crown) is not available on Magic: The Gathering Online. He is not in a precon, he is not in boosters and he is not available in crates won during events. His big brother and sister, Recruiter of the Guard and Sanctum Prelate were added last month, but he is still trapped in the paper game; imprisoned by his very creators. You might ask "But why does this matter?" Beyond him being a playable Legacy card currently unavailable in the digital version of Magic, Palace Jailer is representative of a larger problem - that MTGO is quite often incapable or purposefully held back from emulating the paper product it is meant to. The reasons for this are plentiful; from problems with ancient software, through to lack of demand (such as with drafting older sets like Mercadian Masques) MTGO often ends up with cards like Rishadan Port being insanely expensive when compared to other staples, or cards just being missing altogether. Do we know why Palace Jailer has been left out? Not really. We do know Conspiracy: Take the Crown Uncommons have not been printed on MTGO at all due to the set being undraftable online. The extra mechanics of revealing cards or choosing particular cards mid-draft or particular players at the table doesn't translate very well online and doesn't fit in on how the program is structured. However, newly printed rares were placed into prize 'crates' which are obtained when you win events. Wizards of the Coast, in their infinite wisdom decided to not include uncommons in this. However, Jailer has made some ripples, being seen in Legacy decks such as Death and Taxes and Soldier Stompy. I have tweeted about it to some of the WotC staff involved with MTGO, including Lee Sharpe, the Digital Product Manager for Magic Online, but I have been ignored. So I propose we create a voice - lets band together be noticed. Use the hashtag #freethejailer when talking about the project, and share this petition and the accompanying video. Lets show WotC that we do care, and we don't want to have to 'vote with our wallets'. Lets ask them to listen to the community and actually strive to make MTGO a functioning product that effectively emulates its paper counterpart. Lets free the jailer.
