Condemn and punish ALL athletes that commit domestic violence including Brittney Griner.
Last year, Jeff Taylor of the Charlotte Hornets pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor domestic violence assault charge. He caused minor injuries to a woman with whom he was having a romantic interest after pushing her violently which caused her to hit a wall. He was required to complete a 26 week domestic violence intervention program. The NBA condemned the incident and domestic violence in general and suspended Taylor for 24 games the following month. Last month Brittney Griner pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct during a domestic violence incident. She caused minor injuries to a woman with whom he was having a romantic interest (her fiancee) after an altercation. She is required to complete a 26 week domestic violence intervention program. The WNBA has said nothing and done nothing. No condemnation. No suspension. USA Basketball has also remained silent. By this silence, the WNBA and USA Basketball are sending a message to our children and to women that abuse by women is OK; Abuse by men is horrific. This is not what our children and what women in society should be learning from the sporting world and from domestic violence groups. There has been silence from these domestic violence groups as well. These groups also expressed outrage at the Ray Rice and Adrian Petersen incidents. But these groups remain silent when women are found to perpetrate domestic violence. Hundreds of studies, including the latest CDC study on partner violence, have shown that domestic violence perpetrators and their victims are roughly equal by gender. (http://web.csulb.edu/~mfiebert/assault.htm) The WNBA and USA Basketball must immediately condemn Ms. Griner's actions, domestic violence in general, and the WNBA must suspend Ms. Griner. If not, then if there is another male perpetrator from the NBA that is found to have committed domestic violence, he too must not be condemned nor suspended. ALL domestic violence must be treated equally, no matter who is committing the violence. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/wnba--usa-basketball-s-silence-on-brittney-griner-says-a-lot-174351603.html USA Basketball contact (Call also) Telephone: 719-590-4800 WNBA 212-407-8000
