Arrest Those Who Threaten and Abuse John Dayal
We the undersigned express deep concern at the hate speech, abuse and threats against noted Indian human rights activist John Dayal. John Dayal, known for his committed struggle against communalism and bigotry and his defence of democracy and peace, is being subjected to an unrelenting hate campaign on social media. The trolls, all supporters of the Indian Prime Minister, the BJP and RSS, have even gone to the extent of making public his personal contact details - thereby creating a clear and present danger for him. The Culture Minister in the Modi cabinet, in response to directions issued by the RSS at a recent summit where all key Ministers had been summoned, is talking of 'cleansing' India's public discourse, culture and education of 'cultural pollution.' The real meaning of this 'cultural cleansing' is being seen in the murderous violence and threats against activists, writers and filmmakers, and bans on free speech, on non vegetarian food, and organised intimidation against inter faith friendships, love and marriage - all by a range of Hindu majoritarian outfits with the tacit backing of the Central Government. We stand by John Dayal. We demand that the Delhi Police provide adequate and prompt protection to John Dayal, and take immediate measures to identify and arrest all those making threats or indulging in hate speech against him.
