OSU: Please cancel the planned torture of wild mares
The BLM has entered an agreement with Oregon State University to start painful and invasive sterilization surgeries on 225 practice mares. These surgeries are risky under the best sterile conditions and require aftercare. Yet, wild horses will not have the sterile hospital setting - instead the surgeries will be conducted in the "field", and aftercare will not be provided for wild horses in the field. Many horses die from complications and their babies abort. These experiments will be done *without anesthesia*, so the wild mare will be restrained and fully conscious while a technician enters the horses body with an ecraseur (a long rod type instrument) and rips out the horses ovaries. A high percentage of horses either bleed to death, become infected, and/or their unborn babies die. These experiments are to test the viability of performing the surgeries on a mass scale to prevent wild horses from breeding in the wild. There are other solutions proven effective that will not harm the horses. The American public, advocates, and wild horse welfare supporters are outraged. There are lawsuits pending to try to stop these deadly experiments and the long term plans to implement them as a program for all wild horses. And one law suit managed to put off the start date of these experiments delaying them about 6 weeks. This petition asks OSU President Edward Ray to cancel plans for a distinguished University to assist in the torture and abuse of innocent wild horses.
