Stop RIPTA from charging senior citizens and persons with disabilities
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) has proposed (starting in 2017) to begin charging senior citizens and persons with disabilities $1 per ride. Most of these individuals live on a monthly Social Security/SSI check (often, less than $800 per month). This will result in isolating such persons by limiting their pursuit of educational, vocational, social, and recreational opportunities. It also unfairly discriminates against them, in violation of the Rhode Island Constitution. Moreover, RIPTA can make up the shortfall in revenue by other means, including cutting salaries of its executives.
