Stray Dogs Beaten with Sledgehammer in Greece
A man in Greece attempted to kill three stray dogs by repeatedly beating them with a sledgehammer. On December 23 2011 in Moschato, near Athens, the man lured the dogs with food inside a fenced yard and, wielding a sledgehammer, proceeded to smash two of the dogs on the head. The third dog managed to escape before the door was shut. The remaining two were victims of his unspeakable brutality. Their screams brought people to their windows and doors. The man’s reply to the numerous shouts from witnesses begging him to stop was that he would do the same to them if they intervened. One brave woman called the police. Upon their arrival, the man had thrown one of the dogs, Rigas, in a garbage bag and was on his way to finish off the remaining dog, Duke. The man was apprehended and the dogs were quickly transferred to a doctor. Rigas, the most severely injured of the two, passed away on the 30th of December. A CT scan showed that a piece of his skull bone had lodged itself in the brain. Duke is, as of 1st of January, reportedly out of danger. He is still in shock and afraid of people.More information:http://www.occupyforanimals.org/greece-a-man-of-albanian-nationality-tried-to-kill-three-dogs-with-a-sledgehammer.html The first trial date has been set to 9th of January. Stop Bill Legalizing Killing of Stray Dogs in Romania
The Romanian Parliament voted to pass a law that would make it legal to kill thousands of stray dogs in Romania. The bill was passed by a vote of 168-111, but it is yet to be signed by President Traian Basescu. An estimated 50,000 stray dogs roam the streets of Bucharest alone. The current animal protection law prohibits the killing of healthy dogs, yet stray dogs are killed on a daily basis in Romania. If this bill is passed, tens of thousands of stray dogs, including harmless and healthy ones, may be legally slaughtered.
Stop Cruel Kangaroo Experiment
Update: Great news ! The experiment has been abandoned as the research student has withdrawn his application for the project ! The University of Wollongong intends to confine six kangaroos in a small cage for nine months, to study their methane release as part of a PhD experiment on global warming, despite the fact that the same experiment was done 40 years ago. After the experiment, the kangaroos are to be killed. The University might also repeat this experiment on wombats. The purpose of this experiment stems from the idea that methane emissions could be reduced by replacing cattle in rangelands with kangaroos, as kangaroos produce little methane, a fact that has already been investigated and acknowledged. A spokesperson for the University has said that no decision has been made by the ethics committee about using kangaroos for this experiment, and that the matter is still under consideration. Please convince them to scrap this plan. Photo credit: Anne Keiser
Wicked Campers Promotes Running Over Kangaroos
Wicked Campers, a campervan hire company, is promoting the killing of kangaroos by having stickers in their vans that read "Kangaroo's, run the f---ers down". According to the chief executive of Wicked Campers, the message of the sticker is to drive straight ahead if a kangaroo appears on the road, and not to swerve. Please ask the company to remove these stickers from all Wicked Campers vans. The Himachal Pradesh government has backed a farmer outfit's plan to shoot monkeys and other animals on sight in order to prevent damage to crops. Kheti Bachao Sangarsh Samiti (KBSS) encouraged the farmers to apply to conservators of forests and divisional forest officers for permits allowing the mass shooting of monkeys, but also wild boars and blue bulls. Their goal was to secure 10,000 permits by December 9. "Operation Monkey" started on Dec. 10 and will end on Dec. 23, so there is still time to prevent more shootings. http://sify.com/news/shoot-on-sight-orders-issued-against-himachal-monkeys-news-national-kmboa4eigic.html http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_farmers-are-shooting-monkeys_1480033 http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chandigarh/Protest-march-held-against-monkey-killing/articleshow/7101932.cms Please ask the government to intervene and stop this cull !Further action needed:The NGOs contacted Minister Ramesh, asking for an intervention.http://sify.com/news/ngos-ask-jairam-to-stop-animal-killings-in-himachal-news-national-kmntuljegci.htmlContact Minister Ramesh (online contact form): http://moef.nic.in/modules/contact-ministry/contact-ministry/The International Organisation for Animal Protection in India contacted state's Chief Justice Kurian Joseph.http://www.sify.com/news/stop-monkey-killing-in-himachal-urges-animal-rights-group-news-national-kmosErfjcdc.htmlContact Chief Justice Kurian Joseph through The Registrar GeneralE-mail: email@example.com(Direct your message to Hon'ble Mr. Justice Kurian Joseph)
Company to Grind 70,000 Hens Alive
UPDATE: PETA has received a confirmation from the Nebraska State Patrol that TWJ will not grind the 70,000 chickens. For more information:http://www.peta.org/b/thepetafiles/archive/2010/11/10/victory-hens-spared-horrific-death-in-grinder.aspx According to PETA, the Nebraska egg company TWJ Farms is planning to, on November 12, grind up approximately 70,000 chickens while they are still alive. The practice is reportedly standard procedure at the company's factory farms and has resulted in the death of some hundreds of thousands of hens. Claybaugh, the CEO of the company, says the spent hens are 'recycled' to be used in dog and cat food. According to him, the grinding process kills the chickens more quickly than gassing, and he considers it to be more humane for that reason. Maceration is an acceptable method of euthanasia for day-old poultry - it is common procedure to kill unwanted male chicks by dumping them into a grinder. Although death is reportedly instantaneous for chicks, the result can be very different for adult chickens. In many cases, the grinder fails to kill the animals, resulting in the ejection of mutilated chickens with missing wings or limbs, who are subsequently left to die. http://www.peta.org/b/thepetafiles/archive/2010/11/05/chickens-to-be-pulverized-alive.aspx The Wayne County Sheriff's Office has been asked to investigate these possible violations of Nebraska's Livestock Animal Welfare Act. Please demand the company's CEO to end these horrific killings ! Egg production methods are never cruelty-free. Adopting a vegan diet is perhaps the single most important action you can take to prevent needless cruelty to animals.
Ask OVC to End Live Surgeries
UPDATE [1 Oct. 2010] : The University of Guelph Ontario Veterinary College will eliminate terminal surgeries from the school's surgical curriculum ! Instead the school will implement a surgical training curriculum that gives students the opportunity to develop hand skills with simulators and anatomic models, practice these skills on cadavers, and perform closely supervised surgery on live animals who will benefit from the surgery. For more information, please read this press release from the Humane Society: http://www.humanesociety.org/news/press_releases/2010/09/ontario_vet_college_ends_terminal_surgeries_092910.html Thank you for signing ! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The University of Guelph continues to use live animals in the vet training program, despite readily available alternatives. Live surgeries use healthy animals for surgical training of veterinary students. It was recently reported that 50% of dogs in the Ontario Veterinary program have died this summer, as a result of spay and neuter surgeries. http://www.torontosun.com/news/canada/2010/07/30/14876441.html The university has ceased buying lost pets for use in veterinary training and has announced that the surviving animals will be put up for adoption - until recently they would euthanize the animals at the end of the program. While this is great news, the University and the College must stop using live animals in the vet training program. Please urge the OVC to remove the option of using live animals !
Prevent the Killing of Strays in Neuquén
Thousands of dogs will be killed in Neuquén, after an outbreak of two cases of human leptospirosis. It is not the first time the City decides to exterminate dogs. The council recently approved a proposal for the urgent implementation of an existing ordinance of dog control "in order to decrease the population of these animals". For a duration of four months, strays will be killed to prevent a potential spread of the disease. This includes the killing of healthy dogs and runaways. http://www.lmneuquen.com.ar/noticias/2010/7/2/70937.php http://bolsonweb.net/diariobolson/detalle.php?id_noticia=24918 Please urge the government to immediately halt these plans !
