The Irish Government: Legislate for the X Case before the end of 2012

20 years ago on February 17th 1992 a 14 year old girl, known as "X", became the subject of a High Court injunction barring her from leaving the country. She was confined to Ireland to prevent her terminating her pregnancy, the result of a rape following years of sexual abuse at the hands of a neighbour.

Two weeks later, following a huge outpouring of sympathy and horror from all sections of society and all corners of the nation, the Supreme Court ruled that when a pregnant woman’s life is in danger, including from the risk of suicide, she has the right to an abortion here in Ireland. On that date the court directed that we must legislate to allow women to exercise this right - this was to become known as 'the X Case'.

But 20 years later Irish women are still waiting for legislation to allow them access to abortion where their life is in danger.

The death of Savita Halappanavar, who died in Galway after being denied a termination, has once again highlighted the need to legislate for the X Case now. We must not let this happen again to any woman in any part of Ireland.

Enda Kenny and James Reilly have received a report on Savita's death from the Expert Group and will debate in the Dáil next week on Wednesday 28th November.

Sign this petition and show them that the Irish people want Action on the X case now to prevent any further deaths.

Last night, I sat in Dail Eireann listening to Deputies from across all parties and the technical group debate the introduction of legislation for the X case. The majority who spoke were in favour of the bill but due to the party whip system could not vote on it.

Show these politicians they are not alone and that the Irish people are also in favour of legislating for the X case by signing this petition. Do it today. Do it for the women of Ireland.

When I was still in school my best friend became pregnant & was taken out of school at the age of 14. I never saw her again although I know she had her child she missed her education & she was very talented at art. I would have liked to know what her life would have been like if she had been given a choice.

Women's rights are human rights. If men could have babies (and by subsequent default, abortions), I'm sure this would never have been an issue (i.e. medically assisted termination would always have been available). Kick the church back into the middle ages where they are trying to drag anyone naive enough to listen to them and end their damaging control over important these important human rights.

I would never like to hear that any woman died because of not being able to terminate pregnancy when her life is in danger. Woman's life is the most precious

Please keep church hypocrites away from ruling country!

It's a decision to be made by the person involved not by a religion that systematically abused its children for decades. How much crap will people take until they do something?

Because I am a woman and we should all have the right to choose and even in ITALY there has been an abortion law since the 1970s despite it being the CENTRE of Catholics worldwide... Ireland look forward!
