Acknowledge Clostridium diffiicle (A.K.A., C. difficile, C.diff.) as a global epidemic

In the USA alone nearly half a million Americans suffer from Clostridium difficile (C. diff.) infections in a single year according to a study released February 25, 2015 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). **Approximately 29,000 patients died within 30 days of the initial diagnosis of C. difficile.  Of those, about 15,000 deaths were estimated to be directly attributable to C. difficile infections (CDI), making C. difficile a very important cause of infectious disease death in the United States alone. More than 80 percent of the deaths associated with C. difficile occurred among Americans aged 65 years or older. C. difficile causes an inflammation of the colon and deadly diarrhea. Over 14,000 England there were    14 000 cases in 2013-14,.  Clostridium difficile (aka C. difficile, C. diff., CDI) symptoms most commonly experienced is the excessive diarrhea with abdominal cramping/pain, accompanied by nausea, fever, elevated White Blood Cell Count. These symptoms can advance quickly to toxic megacolon and Pseudomembranous colitis which may lead to surgical intervention and can be fatal.  Clostridium difficile afflicts infants, children, adults, and pets. Previous studies indicate that Clostridium difficile has become the most common microbial cause of healthcare-associated infections in U.S. hospitals and costs up to $4.8 billion each year, EU € 3 billion and expected to increase on a global range,  in excess health care costs for acute care facilities alone.  The Clostrrdium difficile diagnosis weighs heavy upon individuals and their families.  Wages are lost, healthcare insurance is lost, independence is lost, lives are being lost.  The community with local and state government programs are also becoming resources for the patient and their families for a multitude of health, financial, and housing support.   Current Treatments are limited and few are meeting the goals of long-term cures.. -Totally eliminating C. diff spores is extremely difficult because they can survive routine environmental cleaning with detergents, as well as hand sanitization with alcohol based gels.(2)- CDI can be treated with an appropriate course (approximately10 days) of antibiotics (2)  C. difficile infection returns in around 25-30% of patients who receive such treatment.- Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has been used as a treatment modality in patients with severe, recurrent Clostridium difficile diagnosis  (3).- In some cases, removing the colon may be required as the risk of perforation increases due to the high fatality rate associated with ruptures.(2). Clostridium difficile (C.difficile, C.diff.) needs to be identified as a global epidemic so that new novel therapies such as ribaxamase (SYN-004), ridinilazole (SMT19969), RBX2660 RBX7455, NTCD-M3, SER 109 & SER 262, DAV132, FMT, and the Clostridium difficile vaccines Cdiffense and PF-06425090 can be fast tracked through clinical trials.  It would be beneficial to make global changes in Clostridium difficile monitoring, reducing risks, expanding education and awareness, and increase medical and clinical management for prevention, treatments, and environmental safety.  Time is of the essence!  Clostridium difficile preventatives and treatments are needed today because tomorrow is too long to wait..  2)Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ban Glyphosate in public places

Glyphosate is a chemical that is used in many herbicides, but scientists are now finding that glyphosate is toxic and tied to a number of serious health-related issues, including cancer, ADHD, autism, celiac disease, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, hyperthyroidism, depression, Lou Gehrig disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, birth defects and infertility. Glyphosate is the active chemical ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup; a broad spectrum nutrient and mineral chelator; an endocrine and hormone disruptor; a patented antibiotic that is sprayed on GMO food crops; used as a ripening/drying agent on non-organic crops such as wheat, legumes, sugar, nuts, seeds. The wide-spread use of glyphosate is contaminating our water and our food, affecting both those that consume glyphosate-treated products and those that do not. That should concern you because the glyphosate based weed killer, Round Up, is being sprayed in all major public areas in our city: In all of our parks, all of our farmers markets, all of our trails, springs, playgrounds, golf courses and schools; it is found in our rain water, waterways, soil and air.  It is nearly impossible for anyone to avoid while being outside. Round Up does not break down for 14 days. The company that manufactures this product is banned in over 30 countries because the people believe their health is more important than convenience and money. Deemed by The W.H.O as a “Probable Human Carcinogen” and most recently, “Roundup causes Liver Disease in Low Doses” there are hundreds of studies that show harm from glyphosate. It is important to practice Precautionary Principle. There is no acceptable level of glyphosate in our bodies or the environment and for this reason we are calling for a moratorium on glyphosate in the city of Orlando,Fl. Glyphosate is found in over 750 products and around 650 million tons have been used in 2013 alone.Glyphosate based herbicides are the most widely used in the world and their use has increased exponentially over the last 20 years (Benbrook 2016). In March, 2015, The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the specialized cancer agency of the World Health Organization (WHO) concluded that there is sufficient evidence of glyphosate’s carcinogenicity in experimental animals and classified glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans. (The International Agency for Research on Cancer 2015)Studies suggest glyphosate based herbicides at realistic doses may be an endocrine disruptor (Thongprakaisang 2013, Gasnier 2009) which may reduce testosterone levels (Clair 2012, Abarikwu 2015), impair sperm quality (Abarikwu 2015), or could cause disturbances in the reproductive development of experimental animals when the exposure was performed during puberty (Romano 2010) which may occur in humans as well. According to The President’s Cancer Panel: It is vitally important to recognize that children are far more susceptible to damage from environmental carcinogens and endocrine-disrupting compounds than adults. To the extent possible, parents and child care providers should choose foods, house and garden products, play spaces, toys, medicines, and medical tests that will minimize children’s exposure to toxics. Ideally, both women and men should avoid exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals and known or suspected carcinogens prior to a child’s conception and throughout pregnancy and early life, when risk of damage is greatest (The President’s Cancer Panel 2010). Other studies have reported kidney damage and liver damage including the potential for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (Abarikwu 2015, Benedetti 2004, Séralini 2014, Mesnage 2015, Mesnage 2017) and observed intestine smooth muscle activity disturbances in experimental animals all at realistic doses. (Chłopecka 2014). Since glyphosate and its metabolites have been detected in air, rain, and water (Majewski 2007, Battaglin 2014), and may be sprayed in parks or schools where children will be exposed, it is virtually impossible to minimize children’s exposure to these toxins. Therefore, we call on legislators in Orlando,Fl to take the precautionary principle to impose a moratorium on glyphosate based herbicides used in Our city to protect our children and prevent our people, pets, wildlife and endangered species from being exposed and our waterways and ecosystems from being contaminated.   Glyphosate is a probable endocrine disruptor and probable human carcinogen that has already been banned in many Cities, Counties and Countries around the world.   Sources:Abarikwu SO, Akiri OF, Durojaiye MA, Adenike A.(2015) Combined effects of repeated administration of Bretmont Wipeout (glyphosate) and Ultrazin (atrazine) on testosterone, oxidative stress and sperm quality of Wistar rats. Stop Unnecessary Spraying of Herbicides and Pesticides on Ramona, California Roadsides

Last week, an alert Ramona mother noticed a truck driving by spraying something while driving by on the side of the road outside her home near her organically cared for fruit trees.  Extreme concern prompted her to follow the truck and she found that it returned to the San Diego County Roads Department on Aqua Lane and 5th Street.  The driver told her he was spraying Roundup for the county, and if the county didn't do so, the roads would crack (from the mowers or weeds?).  Few people were aware that this occurred in our country town. Our equestrian community allows their horses to graze on these roads while out riding and anyone traveling through these areas is being exposed to these chemicals.  The migration of the chemicals when it rains proves this threat is far-reaching. CBS NEWS REPORT: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/lawn-chemicals-can-stay-in-human-body-for-years-even-decades/ The World Health Organization's research arm declared Glyphosate a probable carcinogen.  Germany, France and Switzerland are working to ban Roundup altogether.  Columbia is also placing a ban on the use of glyphosate herbicides for cultivated crops.  Costa Rica is also facing serious heath and environmental issues from the virtually non regulated pesticides used for cultivation.  And many more http://www.globalresearch.ca/the-end-of-monsanto/5452183 Glyphosate is also associated with: Spontaneous abortionsBirth defectsSkin diseaseRespiratory illnessNeurological diseaseCancer http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/widely-used-herbicide-linked-to-cancer/ Defensible space is important, but it should not compromise the health of the community.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Academy of Sciences, and American Public Health Association, among others, recognize the danger that pesticide exposure poses to human, animal and plant health. The growing body of peer-reviewed scientific evidence indicates that pesticide exposure can adversely affect our neurological, respiratory, immune, and endocrine systems, even at low levels. Long-term exposure to pesticides has also been linked to cancer, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Let's join the hundreds of communities across the nation, as well as the many countries who have banned these pesticides and improve our quality of life in Ramona.  Ramonans having the individual choice to opt out of spraying poses a completely ineffective, false safety zone if some neighbors choose to opt out while others don't.   To be placed on the NO SPRAY LIST email Bob directly at Robert.post@sdcounty.ca.gov Ramona does not need its roadsides chemically treated for weeds. We are a rural community with beautiful fields and blooming roadside flowers, which is attractive to our bees and wildlife, visitors and community alike.  Ramona must unite and take action to protect our environment from toxic pesticides by using our voice to ban pesticides from being sprayed town-wide and leaving us in a haze of harmful pesticides. http://beyondpesticides.org/dailynewsblog/category/statelocal/california/ http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/02/160223-photograph-aixa-argentina-avia-terai-pesticides-glyphosate/ http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/weed-whacking-herbicide-p/ http://earthjustice.org/advocacy-campaigns/pesticides

GDC AfterParty Decibel Damage: Totally Unnecessary!

GDC is coming. And we all love GDC. The sessions, the people, the talks… the parties. Ah, the parties. The crossroads and inns where bands of merry adventurers converge to engage in the real conversations. Where we can relax, meet new people, get some good hang time with our old pals, and even discuss elite new techniques with folks from faraway lands. That is until… "What? Wait…what?  I CAN’T HEEEEEAR YOUUUUU!" The after-party crits you for 120 decibels of ear damage! You also suffer a lost voice debuff! You just spent half of your gold to get to San Francisco, the shining city where a 3x multiplier has been applied to the cost of all drinks. You spent the other half of your gold on a GDC pass (or a LOT of time spent grinding to put a talk together, or a LOT of time slaying feral latecomers as a CA volunteer). You’ve fantasized of spending your days immersed in talks and conversations, and spending your evenings regaling friends new and old with tales of your journeys… all to have your hopes and dreams shattered by DJ Archdemon wielding The Unholy Axe of Bass Thumpening, smiting you for six hours straight! But wait, you scream to yourself, this is why you went to GDC! But you can’t HEAR ANYTHING AT THIS PARTY. We are even playing games together at this party (YES, YOU VENUS PATROL), and I can’t hear what the other players are telling me. THE A BUTTON DOES WHAT? THE ROBOT ON DONUTS? SKIPPER DONGLE HULA WEASEL SNORP? WHAAAAT?!?!? And that’s just Sunday night! By the time Wednesday arrives, with the main conference, the expo floor opening… Your lost voice debuff is in full effect from shouting at bars and parties! And everyone thinks that you have the dreaded GDC PLAGUE! Now other adventurers dare not summon you to their get together! By Friday, everyone avoids you like the hoarse-voiced and life-drained leper that you have become. You can’t talk. You can barely hear. And you’re constantly weeping bitterly over your squandered fortune. Everyone will remember you as the sickly noob that made everyone shout into your earhorn. Let’s also consider some facts about this sad scenario… Noise Inducted hearing loss is a real and permanent condition that can result from prolonged exposure to loud noise, or even a one-time event (gunshot, explosion, bass drop from the PA woofer, etc.). The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) states that an estimated 1.1 billion young people may be at risk for hearing loss caused by unsafe listening practices. One out of every 20 young people now suffers from hearing loss, largely due to poor listening practices and earbuds cranked to full volume. Various annual GDC parties are easily measured at 95-120 decibels. That would be like standing next to a chainsaw or an airplane for a few hours. Or having your head impossibly close to a really long train. Or working on a car engine, with your head under the hood, while the engine is running, all day long. Seriously! Many of the GDC participants rely on the ears and their voices for their careers. The dangers of loud environments affect their ability to work. If you were an artist, you wouldn’t want to be subjected to direct sunlight in your eyeballs for 4-6 hours a night, would you?!  We are asking that the organizers of the parties at GDC this year (not the GDC organizers), please consider the volume levels of their public address system (PA) and the music that they’re playing. Any smartphone can measure the decibel levels with a free app, and we would suggest that music not exceed 85 decibels. Attendees can still dance and rock out at 85 decibels. There is absolutely NO REASON to go beyond 85 decibels for your party music. Extreme loudness does not make your party better!  Extreme loudness does not make you cooler!  Extreme loudness is only highly annoying! At the end of the day, we’re gathering together to enjoy the company of our fellow adventurers, to entertain each other with tales of our exploits, to wax poetic as bards of this industry. We hope that you’ll consider our pleas to provide a fun after-hours environment for us to enjoy without our ears bleeding. SIDE QUEST: If you are attending a party this year at GDC where you are experiencing extreme loudness, please do not be shy about explaining to the party hosts, or the DJ that you are there to talk with people, and that you don't wish to experience early hearing loss! If they hear it from just a few people they will TURN IT DOWN! Thank you.
